Markets and shops

Every shop and market stall trying to sell you something is wanting to catch your eye. Most of the intense colour on the street is there for that reason.  In that way the paintings come to me ready-made: somebody has already done the composing.  You could think of the shopper as the spectator of a painting, and the shop display as a painting within a painting.  Or, with the drapery of the awnings and the stall coverings, aren't the market stalls like little theatres?

Shopping also attracts crowds, and this has been a subject of some paintings.
